Until recently, much of the rural land around the world has been managed by peasant communities or indigenous peoples under customary land tenure systems. Nonetheless, land ownership and control of the natural resources has historically been a source of tension among numerous actors. When conflicts arise, rural and indigenous communities with collective forms of property usually lose.
